[...] Last time, we talked about the ways you could preserve your anonymity by keeping your precious novel untouched and unpublished, but what if you don’t write novels? What if you write other things, like articles, press releases, and other types of non-fiction? How can you make sure that they stay unpublished? [...]

@George--Thank you. I have to admit, it's been a little painful, having my tongue over by my cheek like this. Makes chewing at meals particularly difficult!

Deb,

You have pegged my crack-me-up-o-meter. This is such a great set of instructions that I'll happily help donate funds to the surgery to get your tongue rescued from being so firmly planted in your cheek.

There is no doubt that...

Punctuality Rules!

This post was fun to read, Deb! While it probably wasn't your intent to do so, you've reinforced my strong belief (despite being the author of 3 published books, one of them a novel) that the writing is the thing. All the rest has been, for me, a distraction from the real reason I write books, which is that I've never found any other pastime that is all at once creative, thrilling, enjoyable, surprising, mystical and irresistible. Each time, the completed manuscript has been prize enough. The rest is just gravy. I know I'm out of the mainstream on this, and I do love readers' reactions, which I wouldn't have if the books weren't published, but I'm seriously considering bypassing all that distraction for the novel I'm writing now and instead moving directly on to writing the next one. We'll see how I feel when it's finished.

But to get back to your post, I guess the tongue-in-cheek "tip" I'm offering for remaining undiscovered and unpublished is realize/decide you don't actually WANT to be published. That ought to do the trick!

Geez Deb, I have noticed your writing is getting really intriguing lately. It's like your voice is starting to shine brilliantly. I love the humor in this post (I was smiling the whole way through). Oh and please, start sending those queries!

@Brad--I told you--I'm accomplished at this whole, avoiding-being-published thing! I've been practicing for over a decade. I've got one, complete book done (which I still think is GOOD, which is pretty impressive considering how picky I am about quality in books), and I've got two more that are both about halfway done, at about 50,000 words. I really need to finish them!

And, I briefly considered self-publishing about 9 years ago, but couldn't afford it. Now, with eBooks, I suppose it's more affordable, but ...

Deb, You're much further along on being an accomplished unpublished novelist; I have yet to even begin a manuscript. The fact you've written a novel intrigues me. Have you considered self publishing?
