@Rich Absolutely not. What I'm saying is that--for any of us--locking your brain into one way of thinking is wrong because it shuts out new ideas. People can disagree with me and with each other as much as they like, so long as they are willing to discuss their differences and think about them, rather than automatically saying, "My way is right, yours is wrong." That's the whole point.

Deb,

I'm not so clear on what, exactly, you are suggesting. Are you arguing that believing you're right and others are wrong contributes to "poverty of thought?" That's what it sounds like when you say "We believe that what WE believe must therefore be what everyone should believe, since clearly we must be right. We begin to believe that people who do NOT believe in the same things as we do are wrong, misguided, or downright evil for having such radically different viewpoints."

If you are suggesting that, then your very post contributes to poverty of thought. You, after all, think you are right in writing what you did and that those that disagree with you are wrong. There's absolutely nothing wrong with thinking you are right and stuff. It's the lack of consistency I object to.

If this isn't what you are suggesting, clarify it for me.

Really, I think what contributes to poverty of thought the most isn't thinking you are really right; rather, it's lack of concern for the truth. Ideas have consequences. If you believe true things you will flourish; if you believe false things, you won't. If your parents taught you true things, there's no shame in following their footsteps, but if they taught you false things, its best to follow the truth away from their worldview.

Many, many in the west forego truth for some sort of superficial pleasure.

What a great post!! Seriously! I always think that we have so much to learn about how children view the world, with wonder, always questioning, and easily amused. There is a line in the movie "knocked up" where the father says, "I wish that I could be excited about anything like my children are excited about bubbles." Children have a passion for life, a belief in humanity which slowly escapes us as we grow older. I sometimes wish we could be like children. I remember having deep thoughtful conversations as a child as well. It is hard to keep an open-mind if one doesn't want to internally struggle. Poverty of thought, something we should all work to avoid.

This is really the root cause of poverty and many of the world's problems. It all begins with how each of thinks and views the world we live in. I love your unique approach to the problem of poverty and agree that change starts with the way we think.

It's so easy to forget that--while poverty is gritty, grinding, and devastatingly hard--it's also something that can only be defeated by all of us trying to work together and think of ways to DO it. But it's so easy to get stuck in thinking blinders, and then you don't even see that there's a "box" to try to think "outside of."

Thanks for enriching my day with this thought. Opening up the meaning of poverty like you've done is a wonderful idea.
