If you like Amazon, check out ElephantDrive (www.elephantdrive.com). They use Amazon and also their own storage and provide a good clean client for automated backups. The best thing I like about the service is that the files, once backed up are available immediately for download.

When I saw the $5 a month, I was all ready to run over to Mozy and sign up because I've been looking for a solid online backup solution. But now I'm going to stay away from them.

You're right, if they can't even handle a computer upgrade or switch, how can you trust them to retrieve your files should the need arise? And making you set up a second account? That's just unprofessional! Your rant is completely justified.

I think Amazon offers a backup service but I haven't read any reviews on it yet.

Deb, I hope you get your problem fixed. If Mozy has anything on the ball they'll notice your post here and do something. I've been looking for an online backup service, so thank you for steering me away from this company.

I just hate sounding like an irate lunatic, but sometimes, nothing else will do! (grin)

Oh, and I DO have an external hard drive also, but my old computer didn't have automatic backup capabilities--it only got backed up when I remembered to back it up, so this was supposed to fix that. I'd still have my external drive for backup, but off-site total coverage for catastrophes--built-in redundancies in a backup system are generally GOOD, unless, say, they cause lots of extra headaches.

You know, my 3.5" floppy disks never caused me this kind of trouble.

The final solution to this problem is go to http://www.acronis.com.sg/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ and get their Acronis® True Image 11 Home. It is known far and wide among computer saavy ITs, e.g., the PC Doctor at ZDNet.com, www.download.com, and a host of others, as the best backup solution out there.

Then go to www.newegg.com or some such place online, or a good retailer in your town, and get a Maxtor OneTouch 4 500GB 3.5" External Hard Drive - USB 2.0 7200 RPM for about $106 or a similar Western Digital External Hard Drive. Western Digital is a very good drive. They do cost more, maybe much more.

I understand I am recommending you spend $156 in one fell swoop instead of perhaps $5 or $10 per month. Here's the deal, if you can bear to part with $156 you are almost guaranteed your backup worries will be over for a few years. As you have found out, in paying $5 or $10 a month, someone else is in charge of your data and you have no way of knowing what they will do with it, if anything. In paying $156 one time you will know what to expect.
Still, if it were me, I would buy two External Hard Drives to back up to and have one of those two off site at all time, then you will be reasonably assured your data is safe.

I wish you well in your quest.

I enjoy receiving your RSS Feeds very much. Don't let a loss of data interfere with your readers continuing to receive your feeds on a timely basis.

By sometime mid-September I hope to have my own blog up and running. When I do, you will probably find me posting links to some of your fine articles on my blog.

Cheers!

I don`t like online services. I just buy external backup hard drives-cheaper in the long run- and forget it. Much more reliable.
