This is an old thread, but I'll respond anyway. Your point was right on the mark. I began writing letters in response to people who sent Christmas cards, and I now write to my aging mother. I can't be there with her ... at least she gets the joy of an occasional, special letter.

I'm sure it doesn't help, but then, I have no trouble multi-tasking in front of the television. It's the computer that tends to eat up my time.

I write to my Mum 2 - 3 times a week with a fountain pen. Never less than 10 A5 pages and sometimes 20 pages. She has depression and I don't have a TV. The latter is probably the most telling as to where everyone's time goes!

I joined a one-time, pen-pal exchange last summer, just for a chance of writing and receiving a handwritten letter--it was just too tempting to pass up. It still amazes me to think that I used to write (and receive) real letters all the time. I even had a selection of different artists' inks and a nib, dip-pen to write them in, just because it made it more personal.

Sigh.

Oh, geez, it's been so long since I've written a handwritten letter. Well, maybe a year and a half ago. I used to receive Christmas cards with handwritten notes, but I've been lax in writing back. But I used to love getting letters and writing them. Email communication definitely did not give way to long missives. Instead, it became much shorter quick notes or even worse, forwards of chain letters and things, which bear no real content.

Hey, my mother has a friend who responds to e-mails by writing a hand-written note and MAILING it. (grin) (And, no, none of us understand that at all.)
