I just followed a link over from Writing Thoughts, and I'm happy to have found you. After reading your "about" page, I think we might just have a lot in commone! I'm looking forward to poking around more, and I'm adding you to my Google Reader.

Hi Deb, I'm with you here, though I think it's a hard balancing act to learn and enjoy new words without going overboard in throwing them into your writing when a plain word would do. It probably depends on where you're at with your writing and how comfortable and confident you are playing with words - including the confidence to use a word as plain as plain can be.

By the way I think the only way to get a great vocabulary is to read as many books as possible. Your mind then does the sorting, sifting and learning for you and hey presto provides the perfect word just when it's needed.

Write on, Madame!
I used to have a good vocabulary, as a kid. Now I search for words. Sometimes other languages get in the way too.

You're right Deb. Words are great tools AND fun toys. There's a kind of pride of ownership when I can reach down into the toolbox and extract exactly the right implement for the job.
