I think for clarity's sake, it depends on how long the parenthetical comment is. If it's a full sentence, it should be separated on its own. (That seems the right call.) However, if it's just a phrase (or a clause), it can be inserted directly into the sentence and treated much the same way as if it were being broken out by commas or dashes.

The nesting parentheses? Just like algebra! (grin)

Nice post. I have a quick question that I didn't see covered on your examples for parenthetical comments.

Let's say I'm finishing a thought (but I manage to add a parenthetical afterthought right in the midst of the conclusion).

I prefer the way I just punctuated above, rather than putting a period before the parenthetical addendum. (Which I've seen before and am doing now though it makes less sense to me)

Also, I feel like asides can lend to a rich, honest voice. You might not see it in political speeches, but why not in blogging, creative writing, or even certain extents of complex language (that warrant nesting grounding information in parenthesis (maybe it's just the little bit of coder in me, but I love nesting parenthetical comments (just be sure to close with the right amount of parentheses (that's just a rule I made up though))))?

Thanks for discussing some of these things, such as asides and ellipses. I always wondered if I might be using those correctly. I tend to like them quite a bit.

Very useful post! As I mentioned, I have trouble with these asides when I'm writing for my blog. You've cleared up some of the questions I had surrounding these punctuation marks. Now we'll see whether or not I can incorporate them into my writing style. It seems like so many times I make these errors automatically since they are so ingrained in my mind.
